A barium meal is a process in which x-ray of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum are taken after barium sulfate is consumed by a patient. Barium meals test is helpful in the diagnosis of constructional and motility abnormalities of the foregut.

and why are they performed?

Barium meal examination is generally carried to help diagnose various diseases or disorders of the digestive system. These include constrictions, hernias, obstructions or masses in the esophagus or stomach, and inflammatory or other diseases of the intestines.

There are two types of barium meals - Single and Double contrast meals.

  • A single contrast meal : Uses only barium(radiopaque) to contrast medium, and take X-ray images of the upper gastrointestinal tract.
  • A double contrast meal : Uses barium as well as a radiolucent such as air, nitrogen, or carbon dioxide to contrast medium. The double contrast meal is more useful for the diagnostic test.

The process of this test is, the duodenum needs to be to allow clear visualization of structures. A patient may be given a laxative the night before the procedure to ensure the small bowel is empty at the time of the test, which is usually performed on an empty stomach.

The patient ingests gas pellets and citric acid to expand the stomach. Barium sulfate is then ingested. The patient may move or roll over to coat the stomach and esophagus in barium. A needle may also be used to relax the muscle between the stomach and the duodenum. Following these preparations, an x-ray is taken.
