Blood Test

Are you pregnant? Here’s everything you need to know about the blood test for pregnancy.

What is the beta HCG blood test for pregnancy?

A pregnancy blood test is a test that measures the level of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in a woman’s blood. This test can detect pregnancy earlier than a urine test. It is often used to confirm a pregnancy or check for certain complications. This pregnancy blood test at home is also available at Sheetal Chhaya Diagnostics in Dwarka.

Why is the beta HCG test performed?

At our blood test lab in Palam, blood tests are done for confirming a suspected pregnancy, monitoring a healthy pregnancy, checking for certain complications, and evaluating postmenopausal bleeding. It’s important to note that a positive beta-hCG test result does not necessarily mean that a woman will have a healthy pregnancy, and a negative result does not necessarily mean that she is not pregnant. Other factors, such as the timing of the test, the woman’s menstrual cycle, and other medical conditions, may affect the test results.

What are the Beta HCG levels in pregnancy?

Beta-hCG levels typically double every two to three days during the first weeks of pregnancy and reach their peak around weeks 8–11 of gestation. The levels then decline until the end of the first trimester. The range of normal beta-hCG levels can vary depending on the gestational age of the pregnancy.

During the first weeks of pregnancy, normal beta-hCG levels can range from:

  • 5-50 mIU/ml at 5 weeks of pregnancy
  • 100-7000 mIU/ml at 6-8 weeks of pregnancy
  • 3000-10000 mIU/ml at 9-12 weeks of pregnancy

It’s important to note that these values are just a general guide, and the normal range can vary depending on the laboratory and the method used to measure hCG.

Sheetal Chhaya Diagnostics in Palam will be able to help interpret your results and provide guidance on the next steps.

How do pregnancy blood tests work?

At the best blood test lab in Delhi, pregnancy tests work by detecting the presence of the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in a woman’s urine or blood. HCG is produced by the placenta after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus, and its levels increase rapidly during the first trimester of pregnancy. Blood tests for pregnancy are done at our blood test laboratory in Palam. This blood test can detect pregnancy earlier than a urine test and measure the level of hCG in the blood. Blood tests can be qualitative or quantitative; the qualitative test returns only a positive or negative result, while the quantitative test returns the hCG level.

What time should you take a pregnancy blood test?

We will suggest that the timing of a blood test (beta-hCG) will depend on the individual’s specific circumstances and the test’s purpose. The test can be performed as early as 10 days after a missed period. However, the earlier the test is completed, the lower the chances of getting an accurate result, as the level of beta-hCG in the blood may not yet be high enough to be detected. It’s recommended to wait until at least the first day of a missed period before taking a pregnancy blood test.

Results of the blood test for Pregnancy

The time it takes to get the results of a pregnancy blood test (beta human chorionic gonadotropin, or beta-hCG test) can vary depending on several factors, such as the type of test and the laboratory where the test is performed. If you are going for qualitative blood tests, which only return a positive or negative result, the results may be available within a few hours or the next day.

For quantitative blood tests, which measure the exact level of beta-hCG in the blood, the results may take longer. The results of quantitative blood tests are generally available within 1–2 days. But sometimes they might take longer depending on the lab’s workload.
